“Old Reading Glasses”
Author: Xu Yingcai
Father has been gone, gone for a long time
Yet his reading glasses still rest on the desk
When I wear them, I can't see clearly
But his face comes into sharp focus—
Every wrinkle telling a story
Some are straight, like beams bearing the weight of the house
Others curve, like paths measuring the passage of time
And some rise like towering mountains, standing guard in silence
The rust on the frame
Is the stain of sweat from his hours bent over blueprints
The scratches on the lenses
Are the furrows left by his plow through fields of words
The wear on the nose pads
Bears the deep marks of years spent in labor
Father has been gone, gone for a long time
But he must have left something on these glasses—
Otherwise, why, through their blurred lenses
Can I see the Milky Way flowing, the stars sparkling?
