I once thought I would become fluent in French within three months. Yet after moving to Paris, I kept coasting, making minimal effort to integrate: I essentially spoke English with my partner at home and socialized largely with other English-speaking migrants (移民). 我曾以为三个月便能通晓法语。然而迁居巴黎后，我始终在舒适圈里敷衍度日，鲜少用心融入当地：在家与伴侣用英语交流，社交圈也局限于其他说英语的移民群体。

Then, one night, I came across a volunteer-run bar by accident which aimed to bring the community from all walks of life together. Inspired, I volunteered to work some shifts there. 某个夜晚，我偶然邂逅一家志愿者经营的酒吧，其宗旨是将各行各业的社区成员凝聚在一起。深受触动之余，我主动申请在那里轮岗服务。

The first nights were horrible. There were so many expressions I hadn't yet encountered: mouchoir (tissue), torchon (tea towel) ... When such items were requested, I'd run into the kitchen to "check" if we had them, putting the strange words into online dictionaries before rushing back out with my response. One night, a customer asked for a paille (straw). When I looked back blankly, he began to signal what he was after, an interaction making both of us laugh out loud.  最初的几个夜晚堪称煎熬。太多陌生表达扑面而来：mouchoir（纸巾）、torchon（茶巾）…… 每当客人索要这些物品，我便冲进厨房 “核查” 库存，先将生词输入在线词典，再攥着答案匆忙回应。一晚，有顾客索要 paille（吸管），我茫然失语时，他以手势比画所需，这番互动让我们不禁朗声大笑。

Slowly, my language skills improved, and eventually I stopped hiding from customers in the kitchen. I even organized a live show in the bar on a Wednesday night, walking home nursing a warm sense of satisfaction.  渐渐地，语言能力稳步提升，我终于不再躲在厨房回避顾客。某个周三夜晚，我竟在酒吧策划了一场现场演出，信步而归时，心间满是温热的成就感。
